Athletic shoes/sneakers in new or lightly used condition can be donated to certain second-hand shops for reuse (Goodwill is one example). Sneakers that have been heavily worn (or otherwise cannot be donated for reuse) can be recycled via the Nike "Reuse-A-Shoe" program, which converts sneakers into the raw materials used for playground and athletic surfaces (e.g., tennis courts).
